Iron Man 3 Trailer: 5 Major Talking Points

3.Mandarin's Voice

Though it looks like Marvel have got the villain's look down - and thankfully avoided making him look like either of Kingsley's other famous Asian villains, Nizam from Prince of Persia and The Hood from Thunderbirds, which would only have been distracting - I'm not so sold on his voice, and for the second time in a year or so, I find myself distracted by the vocal work of a big comic book villain. For me, Bane's mumble wasn't so much of a problem as it clearly was for others, but Sir Ben Kingsley's Americanised drawl for Mandarin just doesn't inspire the kind of menace we should expect from such a super villain. I remain to be convinced, but his inclusion as a character is an excellent choice to bring a threat that is both grand enough and personal enough to draw Iron Man away from the Avengers pack. The framing of the character in this trailer suggests that he is singularly attracted to the notion of destroying Iron Man because of the lie he represents - that there are real heroes in existence - which seems to form part of a public speech Mandarin will make to a collected audience (given the way he begins it). Personally I still have concerns about how Black will balance multiple villains - with at least Mandarin, Killian, Coldblood and Firepower likely to play reasonably sized roles - in the wake of Spider Man 3.
