Iron Man: Ranking All Of Robert Downey Jr.'s MCU Performances From Worst To Best
1. Captain America: Civil War
It's hard to put just how incredibly visceral Downey's performance in Civil War is into words.
Coming off the back of Avengers: Age of Ultron, a film and performance that felt frustratingly as if they had left some of the juiciest potentials lying on the cutting room floor, Civil War sees Tony Stark grappling with the full extent of the consequences of his actions in a way that was wholly new to the MCU. And Downey's performance is flat-out masterful.
The scene in which Miriam Sharpe confronts him about the death of her son in Sokovia features some of the best acting in the entire franchise, as Downey perfectly plays into Stark's guilt and fear. It expands upon what made parts of his performance in Age of Ultron and the entirety of Iron Man 3 so great in fascinating new ways. And wonderfully, the choice to essentially position him as the antagonist of the film freed Downey up to explore Stark's underbelly with brand new freedom. He wasn't the moral compass of the film at all, which opened up all kinds of new possibilities for him.
But honestly, the scene that really solidifies this as Downey's best work is the climactic battle between he, Cap, and Bucky. His performance as Tony finds out about the death of his parents and Bucky's involvement capitalizes on years-worth of character development in a big way and the subsequent battle is the most emotionally charged sequence in the entirety of the MCU, thanks to the remarkable performances it features.
