Iron Man: Ranking All Of Robert Downey Jr.'s MCU Performances From Worst To Best
2. Avengers: Endgame
The big finale of the Infinity Saga is a riveting, emotional thrill-ride from start to finish that takes advantage of its list of characters quite literally being cut in half by Infinity War's cliffhanger and focuses intensely on its characters, offering up a swan song of sorts for the original six Avengers.
And right at the heart of it all is Robert Downey Jr.
From his opening moments in the film, where he essentially gets to star as Tom Hanks in Castaway but in space with a blue meanie, to the any/all of his interactions with his daughter Morgan, to his conversation with his own father in the '70s, to his final act of sacrificial heroism, Downey gives an absolute tour de force performance here that is well worth the Oscar buzz it's been receiving.
It cashes all of the chips and pays off all of the setups from across Downey's decade of playing the character, resulting in an undeniably cathartic and affecting final turn that is perhaps the perfect farewell to the character.
There's perhaps no better moment of acting in the entire film than the remarkable, silent work Downey does in that final push in just before he says "I am Iron Man". In just a handful of seconds, Downey is able to convey so many different emotions and completely earn that final line.
