Isle Of Dogs Review: 7 Ups & 2 Downs
1. It's Surprisingly Lacking In Emotion
Wes Anderson's films have always been decidedly unsentimental, with a measured, restrained approach to emotion, but if there's any of his movies that would've benefited from being a little slushier, it's surely the one focusing on the bond between a boy and his estranged dog.
Instead, the film feels emotionally neutered - pardon the pun - from start to finish, and even in its most affecting moments, you can almost feel Anderson wilfully pulling back, as though he's afraid of being accused of manipulating the audience or revealing his gooey centre.
There are several key moments that would've been boosted by a more emotive approach, but instead these beats feel oddly flat and impersonal, which is a damn shame.
These gripes aside, though, Anderson has mostly delivered another easy hit for his fans. Here's everything Isle of Dogs nails...
