It Chapter 2: 15 Insane Hidden Details You Definitely Missed
7. The Turtle
One of the most inevitable cuts from the source material was the choice to leave out Maturin was The Turtle who is an important part of the novel but offered some logistical issues on account of being both giant and a turtle.
In the book, Maturin created the universe (specially, it vomited it up after a stomach ache) and helps guide Bill through the Ritual of Chud to find how to defeat It the first time. He's absent from the films, but just as there was a nod to him in the first film, a turtle statue appears in the second as a nod to him. And not only that, when the turtle appears on the desk in a classroom, the camera makes sure to frame it so there's a globe behind it, so it appears on his back. That's a nice little reference to the fact that Maturin carries the universe on the back of his shell.
It's not the only reference to the giant turtle either. In the final sequence, when the Losers are fighting back against Pennywise, he lashes out verbally with what is clearly the worst insult he can think of calling them "filthy Maturin." Out of context, it makes no sense, but it's a great little insight into It's deep-rooted hatred of its old enemy.
