1. Grotesque (2009)
REPRESENTING JAPAN. Aki and Kazuo are enjoying a nice first date when a maniac snatches them off the street. they wake up in a weird place where a mad man rapes them both. This scurrilous act does not satisfy him so he proceeds to brutally torture the couple, paring off their fingers, removing Aki's nipples and arm, removing Kazuo's penis and hammering his nuts onto a piece of board. There is also eye gouging and intestine spilling. Yes, it is all going on in Grotesque. The perpetrator of these heinous acts must be a doctor or a surgeon because in between acts of sadism, he administers first aid to his victims so that they won't die of their injuries. But eventually they do die... horribly. A film so sleazy and disgusting, the BBFC has banned it on the premise that it has no artistic merit and there is no story - the film is just a catalogue of tortures. Given the fact that the BBFC has liberalised in recent years and allowed films such as Human Centipede 2: Final Sequence through (albeit with significant cuts), we can judge how hideous Grotesque is. The BBFC said that there was no way they could make cuts to the film because it would not mitigate its nastiness, and they have a point there. It is an intensely mean spirited film with no ambition beyond the gutter. A very Japanese film, even the staunchest J Horror sleaze enthusiast will find their stomach churning at this one.
