Jason Statham: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked
1. Joey - Hummingbird (2013)
Hummingbird - known as Redemption in other territories - is by far Jason Statham's most impressive performance.
Written and directed by Steven Knight, the film shed a light on the underbelly of crime in lower class England as well as painting a realistic portrait of a war veteran trying to overcome his own questionable actions. It could have easily become a simple revenge action flick, but Statham's dramatic turn helped to ground the movie and give it a sense of realism and authenticity that added meat to every punch.
Statham played Joey who was a questionable character: he did some good, some bad. He had some redeemable moments in the script, but he was also an incredibly flawed figure who was hard to root for a lot of the time, with problems that were beyond cinematic, and felt real.
The actor proved he could hit every beat required, convincing us that he was a war veteran haunted by his memories and experiences, that he was a loser trying to grasp something better and that he was a dead beat father and husband not capable of much more. And as the greatest testament to the quality of the performance, the film works precisely because of the central performance.
And now, on to the Jason Statham performances that sucked...
