Jason Statham: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked
4. Sgt Jericho Butler - Ghosts Of Mars (2001)
A Jason Statham movie directed by John Carpenter actually sounds pretty cool, and in Ghosts Of Mars, we actually almost got that. Statham was supposed to originally portray Ice Cube's lead criminal role, but the man was demoted to the bit part of Sgt. Jericho when producers worried the young Brit could not sell the film, missing the point that any confidence in Ice Cube's ability to sell any film is seriously limited as well.
The role of Desolation Williams (incredible name) might've given Statham a chance to sink his teeth into something juicy, but instead he's given a throwaway role that he does nothing with, possibly irked by the fact that he had a much better role torn out of his grasp. He's not memorable at all and you hardly feel like he's the movie star he would one day become, since the performance lacks charisma and pretty much all sense of personality.
That could all be due to the fact that Carpenter created his worst movie with Ghosts Of Mars and the script was like something a film school student writes when they're drunk and then throws away when they sober up and think better of it.
