Jeff Bridges: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked
And 5 That Sucked...
5. Roy - RIPD
One of the biggest box office flops in recent history (as well as proof that not all comic book adaptations are created equal), this silly CGI-heavy action flick barely even made its presence known before sinking beneath the waters last summer. That's despite it being based on the reasonably popular Rest In Peace Department comics, a capable director in Robert Schwentke, and a pretty good cast that included Ryan Reynolds, Kevin Bacon, Mary Louise-Parker, and Jeff Bridges unfortunately channelling his Rooster Cogburn performance for a film and character that, honestly, doesn't really deserve it. RIPD is not a good film. We're not sure if Ryan Reynolds is just cursed to never make a good comic movie or what (fingers crossed for Deadpool!), but this was yet another turd on his CV. It's also one of the few blemishes on the filmography of Bridges, who co-stars with Reynolds as a member of the titular Rest In Peace Department, made up of undead lawmen who investigate, capture, and destroy renegade ghosts. Reynolds is the recently-deceased Boston police detective who gets teamed up with Bridges' Roycephus "Roy" Pulsipher, a United States Marshal and former American Civil War soldier from the Wild West; Pulsipher has many of the same mannerisms, tics and eccentricities as Cogburn, but without the script or directing chops to back it up. It's a sad retreaed of an Oscar-nominated performance which just reminds you of how good it was the first time around. And make you wish you were watching True Grit instead of RIPD.
