...And 5 That Sucked
5. Dick Harper - Fun With Dick & Jane
Though Carrey still seems up for a workout, there's not much he can do in Fun with Dick and Jane, a perfectly watchable if also pretty forgettable crime comedy - and a remake, no less - that goes the Truman Show route by making him play a likable character - a man who decides to rob a bank with his wife after losing his job - yet without any of the genuine sympathy we had for Truman. The film as a whole is just too tonally treacly and simplistic, lacking the manic edginess of the actor's earlier work that made them such a joy to watch. Is Carrey still fun, mugging for the camera and milling about? Absolutely, but the clean, PG-13 treatment seems meek and uninteresting compared to what could have been a dark, devious, R-rated spin on an old idea. There is never a moment where the film or Carrey surprises us.
