John Travolta: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

4. Jack Cabe - Shout (1991)

The film that earned Travolta his first Golden Raspberry Award nomination, Shout is a miscalculated mess of a movie, which at the time had threatened to add a nail to the coffin of the Hollywood star's acting career. Here, Travolta plays reformed music teacher Jack Cabe, who attempts to convey the wonderment of Rock 'n' Roll to a bunch of troublesome Texas youths in the 1950s. Travolta looks as though he stepped right off a glossy 90s magazine cover in Shout, but it doesn't matter so much as the film fails to establish any real sense of place throughout its running period. Shout can never decide what type of movie it wants to be, and Travolta looks completely lost as a result, missing the mark during romantic moments and going way over the top during scenes where he attempts to motivate the boys. Jack Cabe is a desperately contrived character, a man caught floundering in a film that tries to incorporate about eight different genres into its running time and fails to grasp any of them. Travolta tries to charm his way out but remains well and truly stuck in the movie - and Shout remains one of the worst career choices he ever made.
