Joker: Every Character Ranked Worst To Best
9. Burke & Garrity
As with Marc Maron's casting, the decision to hire Shea Whigham and Bill Camp - two very good character actors who have previously been great in meaty roles - to play the two detectives investigating key murders around Gotham looked like a masterstroke. They add not only a familiarity element, but their profiles also validate the film's credentials even more.
Except, they're not really given anything to do. This isn't a police procedural and though the duo would be eminently watchable in that sort of set-up, the film here just sort of leaves them behind. In the end, they feel like stunt-casting, hired to disguise how little they're involved, which is all well and good but it does mean it's a little disappointing.
They do get to be involved in a key sequence and Whigham's acting does mean you can't fail to be swept up in the emotion of it, but it's just so little for two such fine actors to do.
