Joker: Every Character Ranked Worst To Best
10. Alfred Pennyworth
Imagine a world where Alfred - Batman's kindly, almost matriarchal protector and servant (and much more than that besides) - is reimagined as a far more prickly, far less likeable character... That's this world.
Rather cruelly, that's the lot given to Douglas Hodge, a brilliantly talented, multi-Olivier award-winning actor (watch him in Catastrophe, it's genius and so is he). And while it might seem unfair to mess around with such a beloved character, it does make sense, because it's key to remember that everything that happens in this movie happens through the filter of Arthur's eyes.
The backstory for the Waynes and the crossover with the Fleck family is a delicate matter and there is obviously a lot of trauma there, so it's understandable that Alfred reacts as he does to Arthur, but given what he SHOULD know about Arthur's past, it's weird that a care-giver would be so cold to someone who'd been through so much.
