Joker Trailer 2 Review: 9 Ups & 3 Downs

5. There’s No Over-Selling On The Rating

There's something of a trend these days to use an R-Rating as a means to hammer home a sort of unspoken "coolness" about movies. For Deadpool - and Logan - and lots of other action films, the trailers adopt the rating as if it's a badge of honour and play up to it as a means to triumphantly say "this is Not For Your Parents!!!" or "this film is Different from the Mainstream!" It works, for the most part and it's been the answer to Rs being an impediment to selling a movie.

While there is one major flash that shows Arthur seemingly going full Patrick Bateman and stomping on someone in an alleyway, there's nothing in here that suggests why this film is rated R. Given the current climate, that's also brave, but it cleverly also gives the trailer more space to sell the story of Arthur before the Joker, which means more depth and more background to the inevitable break.

It also means we have no expectations of the hard violence that's no doubt coming so we can't be disappointed if there's "not enough" or if the trailer gives too much away.
