Joker Trailer Review: 9 Ups & 1 Down

1. The Laugh (And The Voice)

Joker Laugh
Warner Bros.

When you're making snap judgements on Joker performances, you've got to look at three things beyond all else. First, you look at the look and we've had that for a long time thanks to the excellent faked make-up test. We already knew that Phoenix looked the part.

Of more concern for this trailer was how he sounds as the Joker. Because Mr J's voice and his laugh are just as important in his characterisation as the warpaint he puts on.

So it's pretty great to be able to report that both are great. Arthur Flack seems to be a bit of a muse of a man with the weight of the world on his shoulders, but also wearing that pressure just under the surface too. There's a calmness to his voice that feels like performance and we definitely see the mask slip a couple of times in the trailer.

And then when he laughs - both as Flack and when he's clearly losing control and becoming the Joker - it's great. It's creepy and memorable without being as stupid as Leto's affected take and it's far more like an oddball than a cartoon.
