Joss Whedon: 10 Films He Should Work On Next

8. Goners

In 2005, another Joss Whedon script failed to get made. This one€™s a fantasy thriller with horrific elements by the name of Goners, and is equally as likely as Suspension to get revisited now that Whedon is a certified cinematic cash cow. Perhaps with Whedon himself in the director's chair. He wrote Goners' script for Universal, and described it at the time as €œthe story of a young woman€™s journey that involves a great deal of horror and some heroics.€ He said it was €œdarker than Serenity€ and comprised of €œa lot of left turns.€ Goners also incorporated Whedon€™s reaction to torture porn, the gruesome and impersonal horror style popularised by Hostel and Saw around the same time. €œI just cannot abide them,€ Whedon told Fanboy Radio of these types of films, and described Goners as €œan antidote to that very kind of film, with the expendable human beings in it. Because I don€™t think any human beings are.€ It certainly sounds like Whedon was passionate about Goners, but he ended up spending the years between 2005 and 2007 working with Warner Bros trying to get a Wonder Woman script together. The endeavour came to nothing, and Goners never seemed to resurface afterwards. Now that Whedon has the time, perhaps he€™ll come back to this idea and direct Goners himself. It has a clear lead character and takes place in a world of his invention, so it certainly fits his criteria for a new project.
