Now, heres one that seems very plausible. As you know, Joss Whedon wants to create new worlds and characters right now. There would be no better way for him to do that than by launching a space opera full of brand new planets, likeable heroes and dastardly villains. While launching a massive new universe, Whedon could even find roles for some of his old pals if he wanted (giving us something close to a Firefly or Buffy reunion, but also moving forwards). The current cinematic landscape could work to Whedons advantage here. With Star Wars: The Force Awakens becoming one of the biggest films of all time, rival studios will want to ape Disneys success. In the same way that they all tried to launch cinematic universes after Whedons triumph with The Avengers, currently studio heads will be looking for new spacefaring adventures to cash in on. This time around, Whedon could ride the Hollywood copycat wave rather than inspiring it. At the moment, if he walked into a studio heads office and pitched a massive sprawling space opera, theyd surely sit up and listen. Thats not always the case, though, so he might want to act quickly.
