Movie 43 was the cinematic equivalent of a wrist-deep prostate exam. It was painful, unfunny, and not an experience you want to revisit. It's surprising then that it attracted a huge array of stars like Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Dennis Quaid, Richard Gere, Emma Stone, Uma Thurman, Gerard Butler, Chris Pratt, Kate Winslet and, of course, Julianne Moore. The plot? Well, there isn't one. And that's not just me being snarky, the plot is really non-existent because it's just a collection of short films strung together by teenagers looking for films on the internet (or, if you're in the colonies, two writers pitching ideas to Dennis Quaid). Moore's segment of the film was actually deleted from the American prints but survived the UK version. On paper it sounds really good, especially with a talent like Bob Odenkirk as the director/writer and Tony Shalhoub as her co-star, but it's just not a funny segment and you can see why they deleted it from the film. And remember, this is the film where Hugh Jackman with a pair of testicles on his chin made it into the cut, so coming a cropper in this particular editing room is so bad it's actually impressive. Odenkirk's style is very dark and witty and it just doesn't fit with the tone of the rest of the zany movie. Moore doesn't look comfortable delivering the dialogue and it might be because she did the role as a favour to Odenkirk, because she really doesn't put in much work and is happy to coast along. It's only about 5 minutes long but it's a torturous watch, not helped by Moore's lackluster performance. It's at least good if you like Bob Odenkirk (and who doesn't) or Tony Shalhoub, but don't go hoping for a great Julianne Moore performance, because there isn't one. She knows it was bad. She knows.
