Jurassic World: Dominion Review - 4 Ups & 6 Downs
1. The Lack Of Emotional Impact
Dominion clearly wants to be a dew-eyed "finale" to this six-film saga that leaves audiences wiping away nostalgic tears by the time the end credits roll, but honestly the whole enterprise ends up feeling almost completely emotionally inert.
For starters, Trevorrow banked on audiences caring a hell of a lot more about Maisie than they likely actually do, and so hinging so much of the movie around rescuing her from BioSyn can't help but feel like a mistake.
Generous time is devoted to both Maisie's backstory and her surrogate family unit formed with Owen (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard), yet the sentiment of these scenes never feels even remotely earned.
Hell, even the legacy cast won't make fans' hearts flutter all that much - despite solid efforts from Neill, Dern, and Goldblum, the writing is slack enough that the film rarely capitalises on the enormous potential of bringing them back.
The film's treatment of Alan and Ellie's romantic past feels like an especially damp squib in this regard.
So, Jurassic World: Dominion isn't very good, then. But it's not a total dud, and so here's what it actually gets right...
