Following his night out with Hawkman, Stewart would then have returned home to Green Lantern HQ on OA to discover that his world had come crashing down.

He would have found that all of his fellow Lanterns - including Katma Tui, Kilowag, Guy Gardner, Salakk, and Tomar-Re - had been slaughtered by Darkseid. It's a little heavy-handed, but the way the plot is mapped out doesn't make this the same kind of thing as casually killing off classic characters like Jimmy Olsen like the DCEU did.

And it would have been a hell of a way to establish how much of a threat Darkseid was.
