Surely the most distinctive visual element of the film's third-act battle against Steppenwolf is the apocalyptic, red-tinged sky, which while at first glance a pretty standard fare superhero movie flourish, is in fact a reference to the term "red skies", widely used by DC fans to describe a comic event with huge, universe-altering implications.

The term originated from the mid-80s Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover, and has been in common use ever since. While its popular meaning is pretty much cast aside in Justice League, there's no doubt that the decision to colour the sky blood-red was in order to purposefully reference red skies crossovers.
