Justice League Vs. The Avengers: Which Is Better?

7. Visuals

The Avengers was the first MCU movie to be shot in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio, which while not particularly cinematic, was apparently a purely practical decision to ensure The Hulk could fit into the frame with the rest of The Avengers.

The visual effects are solid and it looks good enough overall, but the cinematography lacks the inspiration of other MCU movies like Guardians of the Galaxy or Doctor Strange. Basically, it looks like a TV show.

Funnily enough, Justice League is also the first DCEU movie to use the 1.85:1 ratio, because Zack Snyder reportedly fell in love with the format after shooting IMAX scenes on Batman v Superman. Again, it does dillute the movie's cinematic feel, even if in pure cinematography terms, Justice League is a pretty good-looking film.

Unfortunately, though, the sharp lensing is undermined by some horrendous CGI, with Henry Cavill's uncanny valley face, Steppenwolf and the offputting red sky finale all looking unbearably cheap.

Winner: The Avengers is competent but low-effort, while Justice League is high-effort but messy. Neither is that great, but Justice League takes the win because the cinematography looks more like an actual movie.
