Kong: Skull Island - 21 WTF Moments

6. Not A Single Death Is Earned

It may sort of be the point, but there isn't a single death leading up to the grand finale that doesn't come absolutely out of nowhere. The helicopter deaths happen with a little build, but then the walking cannon fodder live up to their names by being hilariously killed off with brutal swiftness.

Ortiz's Victor Nieves is taken away by dino-birds and ripped apart, Toby Kebbell is eaten out of nowhere, a giant spider crab kills a guy who doesn't even get a name... There's just a hilariously casual tone to their deaths that there's literally no impact.

The only one that comes close is Shea Whigham's weirdo Captain Cole, who decides completely out of the blue that he has nothing to live for and attempts to make a heroic sacrifice by holding two grenades and jumping at a Skull Crawler. Just to destroy the moment, though, the creature simply bats him away and he explodes off a wall instead. It's hilarious, but it's built as an emotional end to his arc that is utterly ruined because of the weird tone.
