23. Metal Gear & The Sky Devils

There are a couple of references in the film to Metal Gear, one of the video games that Jordan Vogt-Roberts says were some of the most important influence points for his film.

The boat that Marlow builds out of his salvaged plane is called "Grey Fox" - which is also the name of one of the tracks on the soundtrack - in reference to the character from Metal Gear Solid. And the call sign for the helicopter squadron is Fox, which could be another reference.

More pertinently, Samuel L Jackson's squadron are known as the Sky Devils, named for Howard Hughes' 1932 Aviation comedy starring Spencer Morgan, which also lent its name to a pulp novel series in the 40s.
