Kong: Skull Island Review - 6 Ups & 5 Downs

2. The CGI Is (Mostly) Bad

Kong Skull Island Samuel L Jackson

Combined with the sloppy direction and editing, the CGI in this movie is really, really disappointing, especially considering that monstrous budget. Yes, the creature effects are mostly good, but the green screen sequences are almost laughably obvious for such a lavish production, with characters frequently outlined by a garish blur which makes it clear they've just been keyed-in in post-production.

There's also a lot of motion blur during action sequences which is a common tactic to try and conceal digital seams, but here it just looks incredibly ugly, especially during Kong's initial attack on the choppers, where one wax-like render of a soldier is hurled out of a chopper. It's a cliche to say it, but at its worst moments, it looks like a bad video game from about a decade ago. Not good.
