Quote Of The Night: "Tonight we look beyond the dark days to focus on happier fare: this year's slate of Oscar nominated psychopathic killer movies. Does this town need a hug?" What was most impressive about Jon Stewart's second stint as Oscar host was how much more at ease he seemed this time around. He went from being an uncomfortable newbie to an old pro in just two years. Also, keep in mind that the film and television industry had just wrapped up a writer's strike that lasted many months. Jon Stewart and his writers had to scramble to put together a show that did not turn out to be a huge mess and, for the most part, it worked out beautifully. Jon Stewart was a part of one of the most memorable Oscar moments of the past ten years and it had nothing to do with being funny. The sweet little Irish musical, Once, was nominated for Best Song that year with "Falling Slowly" which was written by the film's stars Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová. "Falling Slowly" was up against three songs from the movie Enchanted and yet the little Irish film won. After Hansard made his acceptance speech, Markéta was about to go up and say something too - but the producers cut her mic. After the commercial break, Jon Stewart essentially paused the show so that Markéta could finish her speech. What followed was the sweetest, most impassioned speech of the night. It was a classy move from Jon Stewart who, overall, put on a pretty damn good show. I'm surprised he hasn't been asked back since.
