Last 10 Oscar Hosts: Ranked From Worst To Best

3. Ellen DeGeneres (2007)

Quote Of The Night: "I want to get a picture for MySpace, do you mind if I get a picture with you?" - Ellen to Clint Eastwood While Ellen DeGeneres definitely did a solid job this year, overall I prefer her first hosting stint. She was just as laid-back and affable as she was the second time around, but with a little more purpose and funnier jokes. She looked comfortable hosting the Oscars from the get-go, but not too comfortable that it would negatively affect the show. After the caustic performances from Chris Rock and Jon Stewart, the Oscars needed a host that would be a little friendlier to the stars - Ellen gave them that. Like she did this year, Ellen spent a great amount of time working directly with the crowd during the 2007 ceremony. This lead to some pretty great moments, such as discussing a film project with Martin Scorsese and getting Steven Spielberg to take a picture of her and Clint Eastwood. These crowd moments worked because they felt more spontaneous and there was less concern over trying to go for a "big" moment. She did a much better job that year of making the celebrities seem down to earth and I think she tried a little too hard to replicate those moments in the 2014 ceremony. Still, Ellen Degeneres has a likability to her and it seems she's a big hit with the crowd too. If you're not too crazy about the comedian, you might as well face it: you know she'll be asked to host again many more times.
