Quote Of The Night: "The Reader. I haven't seen The Reader..." - Hugh Jackman sings during his opening monologue Most people may have just known him as The Wolverine from the X-Men movies, but Hugh Jackman got to show 37 million people just what an amazing talent he is at the 81st Oscars. He put on a rousing performance that showcased more energy than DeGeneres, Stewart, and Chris Rock put together. Jackman was like an athlete out there, doing his very best to entertain both the audience and the viewers at home. He just went for it, and it was good that he did. His best moment had to be the very beginning with his opening monologue. Instead of standing in front of the crowd and telling jokes, Hugh Jackman put on a show. It was funny, it had an interesting concept, and it was entertaining as hell. The actor simultaneously paid tribute to, and poked fun at, each of the movies that were nominated for Best Picture that year, but he did it with set pieces that looked like they were built in someone's garage. There was a very lo-fi aspect to the entire number. This was done in an attempt to acknowledge the recession that America was going through at the time, and while the Oscars are usually bad at this sort of thing, they did a great job of pulling it off. I don't know if you would call Hugh Jackman the ideal Oscar host, but you have to commend the guy for going out there and giving everything that he had. The fact that Jackman's hosting stint still managed to receive mixed reviews just goes to show that we really don't know what we want in an Oscar host. But shouldn't we want a host who actually looks like they're having fun, as long as they don't take it too seriously? That's why I enjoyed Hugh Jackman so much. Though Slumdog Millionaire wound up sweeping the awards that year, Hugh Jackman was so great that the awards hardly seemed to matter. And guess what? They don't. Like this article?
