Last Night In Soho: 8 Big Questions Left Unanswered
1. The Ending
Last Night in Soho's final shot of Sandie/Alex appearing in the mirror is portrayed in typical horror fashion. Not only do we see the villain return, but the music builds suspense over Ellie's initially shocked reaction until we get that strangely playful moment right before the cut to black. It's this final touch that leaves us wondering if the ending was truly supposed to be taken as a horror scene or something else entirely.
If you're looking at this through a horror lens, Ellie's smiling response could easily be taken as an indication that Ellie's about to embark down the same road as Sandie did when she became Alex. Some would argue this best fits the movie's thematic exploration of the perilous disappointments that await those who overly romanticize the past.
However, if you ignore the suspense cues, there's potentially a better theory.
Collins tells Ellie that it was her younger self, Sandie, that died upstairs. If we accept Sandie and Alex as essentially two different entities, maybe this final apparition is the original Sandie that so enchanted Ellie at the beginning of the film. Rather than appearing as a menacing figure in Ellie's life, she may now take on a similar role as the ghost of Ellie's mom, appearing as inspirational support during Ellie's prouder moments.
This ending has certainly divided a number of audiences, but it's actually nice that it allows us to assess our own views regarding the film's subject matter. It's a shame the film's numerous other unanswered questions couldn't do the same.
