The pace of a game refers not only to the pacing of the story, but also to the pace at which a player wants to play the game. In a gaming experience as intense as The Last of Us, the pacing of the story allowed us to breathe. The game features instances of intensity and action followed by sequences of exploration, scavenging, and quiet conversation. This interspersing of violent action with rather tranquil adventure heightened the unstable atmosphere of the game and always kept players on their toes. Similarly, the pace of the story allowed story moments and character revelations to unfold organically and not feel rushed. A game as visceral and powerful as The Last of Us required multiple gaming sessions for many people to complete. This ability to control the tempo of the game and not be overwhelmed by the rather brutal nature of many of the events helped people better appreciate the magnitude of the events in the game. In both of these definitions of pace, the gaming platform is better suited to this subject. A film adaptation would lose much of the meticulous sense of pacing in the original story and people would obviously not be in control of the pace of the film itself.
