Life: 7 Reasons It Should've Been A Secret Venom Origin Story
2. The Similarities Between Calvin And Venom
Venom, in his original form, is an alien symbiote that is gooey, thick and dark in appearance. The symbiote relies on other beings to live, which involves taking over the body of a host - in Venom's case, photographer Eddie Brock.
There are numerous similarities between Calvin and the titular Spidey villain, from the way the two look to where they both came from. Both organisms are not of this Earth, and while Calvin is from Mars and Venom is not, the planet doesn't really affect the character in any way - hell, Venom could also come from Mars in the film adaptation and it wouldn't make a difference in the slightest.
Additionally, Calvin shares Venom's gooey appearance, and while the former is white on the outside, you can clearly see that darker colour on the inside, one that becomes more and more prominent as the movie progresses.
What's more, Calvin eventually begins to grow various tentacles and appendages, more closely resembling Venom's web-like, unorthodox human form.
The two characters aren't a perfect visual match, but Life brings an alien organism to the screen in a terrifying, menacing manner, perfectly encapsulating Venom's aggressive nature and need to survive by feeding on others.
These small, visual discrepancies aren't as important when the character's essence is effortlessly captured, and the filmmakers wouldn't have had to change much to make Calvin more closely resemble Venom, visually.
