1. The War of the Worlds

Not to be confused with the 2005 Steven Spielberg remake - where the extra terrestrial attackers are anonymous - the Martian invaders of the 1953 adaptation played a significant role in the future of science-fiction; influencing a generation of visionary writers and triggering almost every subsequent 'Earth vs The Rest of the Universe' film since. Akin to the H. G. Wells novel on which it is based, The War of the Worlds drew a fearful response from its audience. Although many understood that its intention was to innocently entertain, there were those who regarded it with skepticism; conspiracy theorists were rife in the film's wake, feeling at unease by the film's modern day setting. Although it didn't garner as dramatic a reaction as the radio adaptation, where members of the public truly believed an alien invasion was occurring, The War of the Worlds is nevertheless a modern classic of cinema and certainly a heavyweight in the Mars-based genre.
