11. Dr Zander Rice

It's rather a shame that James Mangold didn't want to use Mr Sinister as the real big bad of Logan - even just as an off-screen over-arching presence that it's clear Donald Pierce is answering to. Because his replacement - Richard E Grant's Dr Zander Rice - isn't really up to much.

He's unfortunately side-lined, and while he plays a key role in explaining the backstory of the mutant kids, that information is delivered in such cynically expositionary fashion that you wonder if that was his sole purpose.

Frustratingly, there's also a hint of something better here: almost in passing we learn that his father was one of Wolverine's victims when he brought down the Weapon X programme (in the comics Dale Rice suffers the same fate). But there isn't enough of Rice's personal tragedy in his characterisation: it's presented as almost coincidental to his arc, when it should have been definitive.

All-n-all, he's too cold and removed and not creepy enough by half, but then a grander character might well have been too distracting, so he's not at all fatal.
