Fear The Walking Dead's Elizabeth Rodriguez does well to get much out of the material she's given to work with in the opening act. In truth, she's no more than a narrative device - and like Rice, her primary function is establishing the backstory of X-23 and her fellow mutants.

Gabriela opens a lot of questions - like why Alkali Transigen would hire real nurses to "care" for their clones when it's precisely that compassion that inevitably sees them rebel when the clones are being disposed of. And quite frankly, her function could have been replaced by the VERY handy videos she cut together as Logan's essential look at Transigen's backstory without the film really losing much.

But the performance is still raw and real, and there's a real sense of her fear for Laura while she's on screen. It's just a shame that her lack of development means her death doesn't really carry much tragedy (particularly as Laura barely seems to even notice it).
