5. Excellent Action Sequences

The action in this movie is absolutely superb, from the sheer R-rated insanity of Wolverine slicing off arms throughout to a brilliant car chase that echoes both Mad Max: Fury Road and Terminator 2, and so much more not worth spoiling.

The blood and gore is just one part of it, though: Mangold clearly relishes the opportunity to scale back the visual effects, opting mostly for practical action that looks suitably ugly, brutal and realistic.

While those seeing the film primarily for the set-pieces might be a little surprised at how few there are peppered throughout the film, they are extremely effective when they do appear, and in some cases are among the genre's very best to date.
