London Film Festival 2015: The 10 Films You Need To See

8. Trumbo

The Pitch: Bryan Cranston plays Dalton Trumbo, a famed screenwriter who was blacklisted for his communist beliefs. The film itself looks at his fight against oppression, with a cast of characters that includes some of the best from Hollywood's Golden Age. Why You Should Be Excited: Well, it's a fascinating story that feels a natural fit for cinema that marks Jay Roach's move away from basic comedy. But, of course, the real selling point is Cranston. He hasn't really had a role since Breaking Bad that offered him the same complexity as Walter White, but Trumbo looks to change that - unlike Godzilla we should get some sustained depth. The Buzz: Like several other key American films at the LFF, Trumbo premiered in Toronto, where it received good reviews, with particular focus paid to Cranston (despite some minor directorial issues). Hollywood always loves a film about itself (three of the last four recipients of the Best Picture Oscar were about the movie industry in some form), and while this is focusing on a more dark period, that certainly gives it some serious awards potential. When's It Released? 6th November (US), 22nd January 2016 (UK)
