London Film Festival Day 1: A United Kingdom, The Red Turtle & More

1. Don't Blink - Robert Frank

A United Kingdom Rosamund Pike David Oyelowo
Co Assemblage Films

How many legendary artists stick around into their 90s to sit down and discuss their lives? Famed American photographer Robert Frank examines his professional success and personal woes in this well-rounded account of both the tortured man and brilliant artist.

The fact this film is directed by his longstanding editor Laura Israel only allows another layer of intimacy, teasing heartbreaking discussions about the untimely deaths of his two children in-between chatter about his incredible career that, as one subject says, "captured all of America". Frank may not always be the most congenial of interview subjects, but you'll sure as Hell pay attention to what he's saying.

Rating: It moves fast (and during some music video-esque montage of Frank's work, arguably too fast) and might bewilder the totally uninitiated, but as a historical document of a wonderfully irreverent talent, it's an undeniably rewarding little doc. 6/10
