Lord Of The Rings & Hobbit: 12 BIGGEST Mistakes We Have To Live With
7. Frodo Doesn't Have An Arc
The Lord of the Rings has an amazing cast of characters, but the protagonist of the story is actually one of the less successful ones despite Elijah Wood's strong work in the role.
Frodo doesn't have an inner journey or a real character arc like he did in the books and this does make him a bit of an inactive lead throughout the trilogy. As well as this, he succumbs to the Ring's power and it's only destroyed thanks to Gollum so in a way, he actually fails on his big quest.
Frodo is sometimes criticized for being an annoying character but that's kind-of missing the point. Frodo being irritating is a good thing, for anyone would be difficult to be around when carrying such a damaging burden, so this adds authenticity to the character. The real issue is that, despite being the supposed protagonist of the story, he really doesn't develop enough.
