13. Fili - The Battle Of The Five Armies
Fili faces similar issues in his death to his brother Kili but gets a slight edge because at least this sequence didn't overstay its welcome. With that being said, it is still thoroughly underwhelming and melodramatic.
Fili is the first real casualty of the battle, and as such, the filmmakers wanted to make it a banner moment for the film. He is dragged out in front of his leader, his brother and his friends and made an example of, with Azog using his blade arm to impale him and then dropping him to the ground.
The quality of the death itself is impressive, but the cuts to Thorin and Bilbo have them looking surprisingly uninterested, and this really detracts from the moment.
Additionally, the film tries to make this moment emotional, but sadly Fili was hardly a character that we had been given a reason to care about. He had some decent moments throughout the trilogy, but it was quite hard to care for this scene as he was one of the dwarves who seemed lost in the shuffle, and definitely a second to his brother Kili.
