Lord Of The Rings & The Hobbit: Every Major Death RANKED

11. Thorin Oakenshield - The Battle Of The Five Armies

The death of Thorin Oakenshield is a big part of the original book, and as such, the movies needed to do justice to this great character. In The Battle of the Five Armies, this demise is treated with gravity and emotion and achieves what it needs, but ranks a little lower as it lacks a sense of the importance that Thorin had.

Richard Armitage was a good choice for the role of Thorin and gave a reliable performance. But the character lacks in the fact that he always felt too similar to Aragorn. This feels important in his demise as well, for Thorin's death should have felt like the great loss of a great King, but instead, is more like a simple solider dying at war.

Allowing himself to be stabbed during his fight with Azog to get his final blow was a creative way to injure the Dwarven King. However, the following scene between him and Bilbo - while having some decent writing - ultimately feels lacklustre as they mostly talk about Bilbo's life in the shire.

Their reconciliation is amicable, but the entire sequence doesn't feel as memorable as it should.
