The Dark Side courses through the Vader-obsessed Kylo Ren's veins, but there may be a way back for Luke's nephew in a Jedi-free world.

Grey morality sounds like it will be a core theme in The Last Jedi, so straying from the path of righteousness doesn't necessarily spell certain doom the way it once did in the Star Wars universe.

Snoke's interest in Ren stems from his ability to channel elements from both sides of the Force, which makes him a prime candidate for the 'grey Jedi' clan Luke has been tipped to assemble, providing Skywalker can bring him back to the light.

Interestingly, Mark Hamill recently told Entertainment Weekly that Luke believed his nephew was the chosen one - the old poisoned chalice that Vader drank from in the earlier films - hence why he's so cut up over his defection. Perhaps Skywalker's greatest failure was neglecting to encourage Ren to embrace the darkness within him, allowing it to coexist with the Force?

Ren certainly embraced his inner darkness when he rammed that Lightsaber through Han Solo, and many fans believe that he is irredeemable as a result of these fateful actions.

By acknowledging that there is a degree of darkness in all heroes, The Last Jedi is about to put that theory to the ultimate test.
