Now this would be quite the 'I am your father moment' and it's a popular, if a bit far-fetched, fan theory that has been doing the rounds.

Scores of message board users have tipped Luke to turn to the Dark Side in The Last Jedi, with some claiming that he's the sequel trilogy's main villain, pulling strings behind the scenes while Snoke is but a red herring.

Skywalker was almost tempted by the Dark Side in the original trilogy, motivated by his desire to connect with his father, and later his fear for the safety of his friends. What if, in those long days of reflection and in-depth study of the Force during his exile, Luke was finally seduced by its malign elements?

It sounds controversial and outlandish, but making Skywalker evil in the Last Jedi would see his story arc mirror that of his father's, setting up Episode IX's endgame in which the good guys attempt to bring him back to the light.

Turning one of the greatest movie heroes of all time evil would send shockwaves across the galaxy and have serious implications for the Star Wars saga, not to mention The Last Jedi.

Learning about the death of his close friend Han may be the path to hate and anger which sends Luke towards his dark destination, putting him on an eventual collision course with his new student, Rey, which culminates in a clash of Lightsabers.

If the Last Jedi does choose to go down this disquieting avenue, let's hope they at least have the decency to redeem Luke in Episode IX by having Leia, Rey and the good guys remind him who he was.
