Inevitably since this is the same universe, the film's impressive armoury also includes nods back to the original trilogy.

Max wields his familiar sawn-off shotgun (as do Nux and Furiosa this time out), making a full-house of four appearances for the devastatingly effective weapon.

But not only that, there are also appearances for wrist-mounted cross-bows that first appeared in Beyond Thunderdome and the use of bolt cutters as a deadly weapon.

In an even more tangible reference, just as Max is forced to surrender all of his weapons in Beyond Thunderdome, so too is Furiosa in Fury Road. In both cases, each character withholds a hidden knife: in the third film, Max hides a blade in a fly swatter and here Furiosa's is in her gear stick.
