Man Of Steel 2: 8 Comic Book Storylines That Must Be Adapted
3. Whatever Happened To The Man Of Tomorrow?
From one Alan Moore classic to another, Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? is potentially even more difficult to adapt than For The Man Who Has Everything due to its standalone nature. Nonetheless, elements of it would make for a great movie.
The original comic acted as an imagined end to the Superman legend. Ten years after the Man of Steel's last sighting, it sees Lois Lane reflect on how the hero's life fell apart and how he eventually came to be no more. As a celebratory story of the whole Superman mythos, it features just about every major ally and enemy Clark Kent ever had.
Naturally, the finale aspect of Man of Tomorrow would not work for Man of Steel 2 as it (hopefully) won't act as a farewell to the movie character. What could be borrowed for the film, though, is the central mystery and structure. We could start with a jump into the future and work backwards as the story is told through flashbacks. It would be a unique storytelling device for a superhero film to use, calling back to the classic structure of Citizen Kane. Or Citizen Kal-El, in this case.
Moore's comic also has a nice blend of brightness and darkness, as it features some pitch-black takes on Superman's villains. In particular, it actually manages to make bowler-hat-wearing imp Mr Mxyzptlk scary. That's definitely something that would fit in with the ethos of the DCEU.
