9. Embrace The Mythology For A New Generation
When Man of Steel is released in theaters this June, it will be 75 years since his debut in Action Comics #1 in 1938. Superman truly was the first superhero. There have literally been thousands of stories told about the big blue boyscout. While the Man of Steel may have the longest history in comics, his cinematic version has waned in popularity in recent years. Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy and Marvel's Cinematic Universe are the undisputed kings of the superhero film genre. Despite Superman Returns' moderate box office success, it wasn't embraced by the world at large like the original in 1978. Man of Steel promises to tell the origin story of Superman for a new generation. There have been countless interviews and quotes from those involved stating that promise. With only a couple trailers and interviews so far it's difficult to see what this new interpretation will look like. While the filmmakers have set out to make Superman updated and relevant for this generation, they seem to take pride in the fact that they are making a Superman film and want to honor the mythology. Hopefully that pride and honor will amount to a great mixture of nods to the history as well as embracing the current world we live in.
