3. Hope
Superman has always been a symbol of hope. The dialogue from the Man of Steel teaser trailer with Jor-El narrating sums it up perfectly:
"You will give the people an ideal to strive towards. They will race behind you. They will stumble. They will fall. But in time, they will join you in the sun. In time, you will help them accomplish wonders."
Depending on what story you read or what Superman fan you ask, the symbol on his chest could have different meanings. It could simply be the first letter of his name or the coat of arms for the house of El. In 2004, Mark Waid wrote the story Superman: Birthright. In that story, the "S" was the Kryptonian symbol for hope. I want the Superman we see in Man of Steel to inspire hope not only in the people around world we see on the screen but in our own as well. It is time for the world's greatest superhero to re-take his title from Batman and The Avengers. I hope he will.
