Man Of Steel: 9 Things We Want From The New Superman Film

2. "Super" Man

man_of_steel_2b We all know what Superman's abilities are. We know we will see most, if not all of them showcased at one point or another in Man of Steel. However, there is one thing that myself and the rest of my esteemed colleagues who contributed to this article, all unanimously want: Superman needs to punch someone! We know he's fast, we know he can lift heavy things, we know he can shoot lasers out of his eyeballs, and we know he has minty-fresh freeze breath. For the love of Zeus, please, please let him punch Zod in the face! Superman is strong and nearly invincible but we want him to be formidable when he needs to be. I want to see a Superman who isn't afraid to show his anger and punch a hole in the earth or Zod's face. He needs to be a bad-ass and the only way he truly can is if we see him do things he's never done. With Zack Snyder's penchant for action movie direction, I honestly believe we are in for one hell of a ride but it needs to happen without a doubt. However, throwing a punch or two won't be enough. Despite all of his powers and abilities, we should also be reminded that he was raised to be a human being. Just because he puts on a cape doesn't mean he becomes an infallible god. He was raised to show compassion and to do what he felt was right. Even though he is physiologically different from every human being on the planet, because he was raised like one of us, he can make the same mistakes that we do. We need to see him struggle and we need to see that he doesn't always know what the right decision is. We don't need him to be perfect. We know he can be a god, we need to know he can be human. Above all, Superman needs to show that he believes in himself. There's no doubt that early on Clark Kent will struggle while he tries to figure out who he really is and how he fits in the world around him. Once he takes on the mantle of Superman we have to believe that he believes in what he's doing. If he believes in what he's doing then he should also enjoy what he's doing to an certain extent. Of course the weight of the responsibility of being the world's protector may crush even shoulders of steel but it shouldn't stop him from taking pride in fulfilling his destiny. While stopping Zod from destroying the world will be undoubtedly high on his agenda, it would be great if we saw that nothing would be too small for Superman to handle. Rescuing a cat out of a tree, maybe? Whatever it is, I hope something shows that Superman cares about more than just the big picture.
