...And 5 That Sucked
5. Lewis Bartholamew - The Truth About Charlie
The Truth About Charlie might not be the worst film of Wahlberg's career, but it is certainly the most blandly forgettable, a remake of the 1963 classic romance Charade. The plot is a pretty daft caper if rendered in slightly more gritty fashion here, about a woman (Thandie Newton) whose husband is murdered, and teams up with a mysterious stranger (Wahlberg) to find out exactly what happened. The key problem with the film is that Newton and Wahlberg have zero chemistry whatsoever, as if trying to compete with Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant's sizzling rapport isn't already difficult enough. Wahlberg is given very little to work with here - his character is painted as vacuous and thinly-drawn - and as such he really comes to represent the complete opposite of what Grant's appealing romantic lead did. Sure, it's not all Wahlberg's fault, but hey, he chose to star in the project, so he can suffer the consequences.
