5. Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel's debut in the MCU has been a long time coming, and her arrival earlier this year definitely had people talking. As the franchise's first female-led film, it was a big deal, much like Black Panther was in 2018, though it turned out to be far more divisive with fans and critics than that film.

Compared to the debuts of characters like Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, Scott Lang, or even the various Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain Marvel didn't feel as though it offered any insight into who Carol Danvers is and what makes her tick underneath the fact she can kick ass. In many ways, the role felt underwritten for the capable Brie Larson, as if the canvas of Carol's personality and deeper character work was set up for future films to fill in the blanks.

Despite that, though, the film still served up a lot of fun, particularly through the performances of Samuel L. Jackson as a young Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn as Talos. Its connections to the MCU at large were also welcome, ranging from an appearance of the Tesseract to characters like Phil Coulson, Korath, and Ronan.

There's still a world of potential ahead for Captain Marvel and a lot of blank space left to fill in about her history, and hopefully her next outing can only improve on the foundation that's been set.
