4. Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Season 4

MCU 2016
EW

After three seasons of shenanigans involving HYDRA, Grant Ward, and Inhumans, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. took a turn towards the supernatural in its fourth season. With the introduction of the Robbie Reyes version of Ghost Rider - played admirably by Gabriel Luna - and the pivotal Darkhold book, the season broke away from the scientific and into the mystic, giving the show an interesting new twist that, when coupled with the new S.H.I.E.L.D. dynamic, felt like a fresh slate for the show.

That's not to say Inhumans haven't continued to play a part in the show; from Jeffrey Mace becoming the new S.H.I.E.L.D. director to the Watchdogs escalating their hunt for Inhumans to the media's views of Inhumans' role in the world at large, they're not going anywhere. But they've been at play for so long in the show now that Ghost Rider came at just the right time to spice things up, and spice it up he did, with some excellent effects work bringing him to life.

Along with continuing to develop the relationships we've come to know, fans got loads of teases - including an appearance from Johnny Blaze and references to the events of Agent Carter - and witnessed the birth of the villain of the next arc: The LMD AIDA. In only eight episodes, this first stretch of season four continued to evolve the show and further prove how confident and how much fun it can be, and the strands left open by the midseason finale makes what's on the way something worth looking forward to.
